School’s Out for Summer: Is Now the Time to Relo?

The Ultimate 2025 Consensus Lists for the Best Places to Live, Work, and Play in the U.S.
Summer is here, and for many families, singles, empty nesters, and near-retirees, the end of the school year sparks a big question: Is now the perfect time to make a move? Whether you’re looking for a fresh start, new career opportunities, or the ideal place to raise a family or retire, choosing the right city can feel overwhelming. That’s why we’ve done the homework for you!
Our Methodology: How We Built the Consensus Lists
With so many “best of” lists out there, it can be hard to know which ones to trust. To bring you the most accurate and actionable recommendations, we took a consensus approach. Here’s how:
- Multiple Sources: We reviewed and cross-referenced rankings from U.S. News & World Report, WalletHub, Forbes, Niche, Livability, and other reputable outlets.
- Recent Data: Only 2024 and 2025 data were considered, ensuring our lists reflect the latest trends in job growth, education, cost of living, and quality of life.
- Diverse Criteria: We looked at everything from economic opportunity, public school quality, and healthcare access, to amenities, outdoor activities, and even food scenes.
- Geographic Balance: We made sure to include cities, towns, and regions across the U.S., so there’s something for everyone, no matter your preferred climate or lifestyle.
And, while our team is admittedly partial to our HQ hometown of Greenville, SC (which we think is a hidden gem!), we’ve deferred to these trusted national sources to keep things fair and objective.
After compiling the top picks from each source, we tallied up the most frequently mentioned and highest-ranked cities to create consensus Top 10 lists for each category.
